Make Money Betting on Soccer

In case you didn’t know, soccer just happens to be the most widely bet sport in the world. It makes sense as it is the world’s game.

Betting on soccer is somewhat different than betting on the Big 4 professional sports in North America (NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL). There are various competitions with different rules and there are some different wagers that you don’t find in other sports.

If you want to make money betting on soccer, it is best to make sure you understand the various ways to bet on the sport.

Before we move on, last week we answered an age-old question. What is the best way to bet on soccer? See the answer.

Three-Way Moneyline Bets

In soccer as opposed to the four major North American professional sports, matches can end in a tie. That makes moneyline betting somewhat different in soccer as there are three results, not just two.

When betting the three-way moneyline, there are three options. Here is what they look like.

  1. Team A Wins
  2. Team B Wins
  3. Team A and Team B Draw

Three-way moneyline bets are graded only on the first 90 minutes of play, aka Regular Time. Any extra time does not count for the result of a bet. Maybe this can help you when reading soccer betting odds.

The 2014 World Cup final offers a great example of how three-way moneyline bets work. The line closed like this:

Germany +130

Argentina +255

Draw +230

At the end of the 90 minutes of regular time, the match was tied at 0-0. Those who bet the Draw – $100 to win $230 – were winners. Any bets on Germany or Argentina to win lost despite the fact that Germany did win the match in extra time.

The Two-Way Moneyline

Soccer bettors can also wager on the two-way moneyline, which is offered in two ways: Double Chance and Draw No Bet.

The Draw No Bet wager eliminates the draw as an option. This resembles moneyline bets that U.S. bettors are more accustomed to – Team A wins or Team B wins. That’s it.

The Double Chance bet gives bettors the opportunity to increase their chances of winning. You bet on either team to win or you bet on a specific team to Win or Draw. It works like this.

  1. Team A Wins or Draws
  2. Team B Wins or Draws
  3. Team A Wins or Team B Wins

Because of the better chance of winning, bettors won’t get the odds they would in a three-way moneyline. Sticking with the World Cup example, the odds might have looked like this.

Germany/Draw -215

Argentina/Draw -165

Germany/Argentina -200

Like other soccer bets, the two-way moneyline bets are graded on the first 90 minutes only. That means since this match ended in a tie after 90 minutes, the only losing bet was on Germany or Argentina to win at -200.

Bet the Spread & Make Money Betting on Soccer

Betting the point spread in soccer, aka the goal line, is similar to betting the puck line in hockey. The goal line in soccer is typically 0.5 though sometimes it can go to 1.5 or 2.5 in games with big favorites.

There is also the Asian handicap, a unique soccer bet which splits your totals bet into two parts. A totals bet could be split into 1.5 and 2.0, for example. If your team wins by three, you win both bets. If your team wins by two, you win one of the two bets.

Betting Soccer Totals

Betting soccer totals is much different than other sports. Soccer totals are given in multiples of 0.25. For example, 2.25 is a popular total.

When betting on the Over 2.25 for example, two bets are placed. One is placed on Over 2 and the other on Over 2.50. If the game ends 2-1, you win both bets. If it ends 1-1, you lose the Over 2.50 bet and are refunded the other as a result of the Push.

Best Soccer Betting Strategies To Help Make Money

With a firm understanding of the different soccer bets, bettors can find success using a couple different strategies. First and foremost, don’t wager on soccer that you are not familiar with.

There are tons of professional leagues around the world. If you know the English Premier League, bet on the English Premier League. Don’t bet on the unfamiliar.

Double chance bets increase a bettor’s likelihood of winning though the odds aren’t favorable. What you should look for are underdogs like the following scenario.

  1. Team A Wins/Draw +160
  2. Team B Wins/Draw -700
  3. Team A or Team B Wins -550

A bettor has two chances to win on the underdog Team A in this case. If you like an underdog, but don’t want to risk betting on the upset this is a great alternative.
